Oradell NJ History
A Brief History of Oradell, NJ
Oradell, New Jersey, is a borough rich in history, dating back to its early days as a Lenape Indian settlement. The area was later a refuge for French Huguenot settlers escaping religious persecution and served as a site for the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. The borough was officially incorporated on March 8, 1894, originally named Delford, a portmanteau of Oradell and New Milford. In 1920, the name was changed to Oradell, which combines the Latin word “ora” (edge) and “dell” (small valley), reflecting the town’s geographic features.
Early Development
Oradell’s development accelerated with the introduction of railroad service in the 1870s, making it a convenient commuter community for those working in New York City. The establishment of the Hotel Delford in 1870 marked the beginning of significant growth. New housing developments on Grove Street and Maple Avenue catered to the increasing population, and the original schoolhouse was soon replaced by a larger eight-room brick building in 1902, which now serves as the Borough Hall.
Community and Infrastructure
The early 20th century saw the establishment of key community services. The Oradell Volunteer Fire Department was founded in 1897, and the Oradell Free Public Library opened in 1913. The construction of the Oradell Reservoir Dam in the early 1920s helped mitigate flooding issues in the region, although it also impacted local flora and fauna.
Notable Residents
Oradell has been home to several notable individuals, including Ellsworth Kelly, a renowned minimalist artist; Joe DiPietro, a Tony Award-winning playwright; and Wally Schirra, the only astronaut to fly in the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo missions. The town’s literary history includes residents like Irving Crump, editor of “Boys’ Life” magazine, and wildlife illustrator Charles Livingston Bull.
Modern Oradell
Today, Oradell maintains its charm as a traditional American “family town” while providing modern amenities and services. The borough covers 2.57 square miles and is home to approximately 8,244 residents. It features a mix of residential, commercial, and recreational spaces, including parks, sports facilities, and historical sites.
